The complete guide to choosing the right skateboard width
How to choose the right skateboard width?
The width of a skateboard is the most important size to watch out for. It is measured in inches (") and usually varies between 7.5" and 8.5". The right width depends on your shoe size, body length and driving style.
Skateboard width based on shoe size
| Shoe size (EU) | Shoe size (US) | Recommended width | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 28-32 | Kids 11-1 | 7.0" - 7.25" | Children 4-8 years |
| 33-35 | Kids 2-4 | 7.25" - 7.5" | Children 8-11 years |
| 36-38 | US 4-6 | 7.5" - 7.75" | Teenagers/small adults |
| 39-42 | US 6.5-9 | 7.75" - 8.0" | Most adults |
| 43-45 | US 9.5-11 | 8.0" - 8.25" | Larger adults |
| 46+ | US 11.5+ | 8.25" - 8.5"+ | Large shoe sizes |
Skateboard width per riding style
Street skateboarding
7.75" - 8.0"
For flip tricks, ledges and rails. A narrower board turns faster and is lighter for technical tricks.
Park & Bowl
8.0" - 8.25"
For ramps, bowls and skateparks. Slightly wider for more stability at high speeds and landings.
Transition & Vert
8.25" - 8.5"+
For halfpipes, pools and large ramps. Wide platform for maximum control and stability.
Cruising
8.0" - 8.5"
For relaxed riding without tricks. Comfort more important than wokeness.
Skateboard length
The length of a skateboard (usually 28" to 33") is less important than its width and is largely determined by the manufacturer. The wheelbase (distance between the trucks) does influence the ride:
- Short wheelbase (13"-14"): Run faster, more technical
- Long wheelbase (14.5"+): More stable at high speed
