Choosing the perfect winter scarf

A good scarf combines warmth with style. Here's what to look out for:

Materials and their properties
Wool: Naturally warm, breathes well, ideal for cold days. Merino wool is extra soft and does not itch.
Acrylic: Affordable alternative to wool, easy to wash, holds shape well.
Cashmere: Ultra-soft and light, very warm despite thin fabric, luxurious look.
Fleece: Super-soft, quick-drying, ideal for children and sports activities.
Cotton: Suitable for milder temperatures, less warm but breathable.

Popular scarf styles
Classic scarf: Long rectangular scarf (150-200cm), versatile to wear.
Infinity/circle scarf: Closed loop, no loose ends, easy to put on.
Oversized/blanket scarf: Extra large and warm, can also be used as a wrap.
Knitted scarf: Chunky knit look, casual and trendy.

Length and width
For the classic double loop scarf, you need at least 150cm in length. Oversized scarves are often 200cm+ and can be worn multiple ways.

Choose colour
Neutral colours (black, grey, camel, navy) go with any jacket. A striking colour or pattern can transform a simple outfit.

Frequently asked questions about scarves

Wool and cashmere are the warmest natural materials for scarves. Wool insulates extremely well, even when damp. Cashmere is lighter but equally warm. For extreme cold, a thick wool or fleece scarf is best. Acrylic offers good warmth at a lower price.

Hand wash woollen scarves in lukewarm water (max 30°C) with wool detergent, or use your washing machine's wool programme. Do not wring! Lay the scarf flat to dry on a towel. Acrylic scarves can usually just be machine-washed at 30°C.

An infinity scarf (also called a circle scarf or snood) is a closed loop with no loose ends. You just pull it over your head - super easy! A regular scarf offers more style options: you can tie and drape it in different ways.

For children, infinity scarves are ideal: no loose ends that can snag. Choose a soft material such as fleece that doesn't itch. Bright colours and fun prints make the scarf more appealing to kids. Make sure the scarf is not too long for safety.

You can wear an oversized scarf in many ways: as a classic loop around your neck, draped over your shoulders as a shawl, or in a loose knot for a relaxed look. Experiment with different styles to discover what suits you!
